Linking to specific comments, slides, sheets ranges and filter views can help you point a user directly to what you want them to view, saving time and frustration for the user.
Remember, you will need to set the sharing permissions for the entire document to view or edit (for a specific user or for multiple users) for these links to work.
Also, it is important to note that linking to one specific place in a document, sheet, slide, etc, does not prevent the user from seeing the file in it's entirety.
Lastly... if you are a bit geeky, there is an explanation about how this works toward the end of this blog post.
Link to a Comment
This works in all the Google Formats (Docs, Slides, Sheets) where you can create and participate in commenting.
Once a comment is created, you can find the link to that comment by clicking on the menu (three dots) in the upper right of comment dialogue box. Select the Link to this comment option.
Examples:
Document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iijFtPUO6tWCAFTc2B6sJ86sSiuw9-ETc_5kdsWHsXo/edit?disco=AAAAWFg8EVc
Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AENGygYeUSiZGdax0WxpDUWB0scehdsYBmqQ_AeGhS8/edit?disco=AAAAVdyZvDs
Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AENGygYeUSiZGdax0WxpDUWB0scehdsYBmqQ_AeGhS8/edit?disco=AAAAVdyZvDs
This can be especially useful if you want to point someone's attention somewhere specific within a document but it does open up your document to people commenting on it. There is no way to give access to just viewing comments. Only those who can comment, can view comments.
Link to a Specific Slide
To link to a specific slide in a presentation, click on the slide you want to link to in the left pane and copy the url from the address bar. When a user clicks on that url, that specific slide will open.
Example:
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1sYbEl9SUIWo8y_3KrtCDmpKqswGWMCK7GP4WGPI0-rI/edit#slide=id.g1166baba7c0_0_0
Link to a Specific Sheet, Range or Filter View Within a Spreadsheet
You can use the unique url of an individual sheet, range or filter view to link directly to it.
Link to a specific sheet within a workbook
To link to a specific sheet within a workbook, copy the url while on that specific sheet and share that url. When that url is clicked it will bring the user to that specific sheet.
Example:
I want the user to view the Class 2 sheet:
If I want a user to only view one specific sheet, I can set the share permissions of the workbook to "view only" and hide the other sheets. With view only privileges, the user will not be able to unhide hidden sheets.
Note: Sensitive information should never be shared in this way. If a user with edit rights unhides a sheet, viewers on the spreadsheet will be able to view all the sheets regardless of the url they are using.
Link to a Specific Range Within a Spreadsheet
To link to a specific range within a spreadsheet, highlight the range you want to share, control click on the highlighted range, select View more cell actions > Get link to this range.
Linking to a specific range will highlight the range without hiding the remainder of the spreadsheet.
Link to a Filter View
To link to a Filter View, create the filter view, and while viewing the Filter View, copy the url.
(Here are instructions on how to create a Filter View.)
Although the link points directly to a filtered view of your data, even a viewer can turn off the filter and view the entire spreadsheet.
Example:
The url for the example sheet is:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AENGygYeUSiZGdax0WxpDUWB0scehdsYBmqQ_AeGhS8/edit#gid=0
We can break down the url into its constituent parts:
Standard first part: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/
Sheet Unique ID: 1AENGygYeUSiZGdax0WxpDUWB0scehdsYBmqQ_AeGhS8
Worksheet ID: /edit#gid=0 (this is standard for the first sheet)
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AENGygYeUSiZGdax0WxpDUWB0scehdsYBmqQ_AeGhS8/edit#gid=0
We can break down the url into its constituent parts:
Standard first part: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/
Sheet Unique ID: 1AENGygYeUSiZGdax0WxpDUWB0scehdsYBmqQ_AeGhS8
Worksheet ID: /edit#gid=0 (this is standard for the first sheet)
If you have a Spreadsheet with multiple sheets, you’ll see the Worksheet ID at the end of the url changes as you move to different sheets.
For example, if the Summary sheet is selected, the final part of the url changes from edit#gid=0 to edit#gid=2135525880
For example, if the Summary sheet is selected, the final part of the url changes from edit#gid=0 to edit#gid=2135525880
If you want to link to a specific range, an additional part is added to the url that points to that range.
In this example, the addition is &range=A1:D10
If you use a Filter View in your Sheet, there is an additional part added to the url that points to that view.
In this example, the addition is &fvid=1388289954
