Version History in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drawings

Google has moved from Revision History to Version History in Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drawings. What's significant about this change is that you can now create named versions to keep track of edits. This can be very helpful if you or others are planning on making significant changes and want to be able to go back to a specific previous version if those edits do not work out as intended. Examples of version names you might use are Draft 1, Dawna's (insert your name here) Draft, Ready for Review, Ready for Print, Final Release, etc.

To name a version:
  • Open a document, spreadsheet, slideshow or drawing.
  • At the top, click File, Version history and then Name current version.

To view all edits and versions or to go back to a previous version:
  • Open a document, spreadsheet or slideshow or drawing.
  • At the top, click File, Version history and then See version history.
  • In the right panel, click a timestamp to see an earlier version of a file.

This simple to use tool makes working on documents together even more collaborative!
